If you have ever found yourself sexually aroused after viewing somebody’s buttocks as they walk away from you or if you spend insane amounts of time thinking about another person’s buttocks in a sexual manner, read on! You will soon find out why you could be suffering from a condition referred to as Pygophilia.
Pygophilia is a condition involving sexual attraction to buttocks whereby one becomes sexually aroused after seeing or touching another person’s buttocks. It also refers to sexual urges or fantasies involving another person’s buttocks. Essentially, the bum become the primary focus of sexual attention.
The word pygophilia combines ‘Pygo’, the Ancient Greek word for the rump of an animal, and ‘Philia’, meaning love. A related English word of Greek origin “callipygian” indicates someone who has beautiful buttocks.
Pygophiles, or pygophilists as they are sometimes called, are the people who suffer from pygophilia and they are not gender-specific. They could be male, female, or any other gender. This term may also describe anyone who is sexually focused on the buttocks.
Pygophiles find themselves spending abnormal amounts of time looking at or fantasizing about another person’s buttocks. They might also feel an incessant urge to touch the other person’s butt. They enjoy kissing, licking, caressing, or just playing around with the buttocks of others. They may also experience sexual pleasure by rubbing their buttocks against someone else’s. Most pygophiles are attracted to people with big bums.
Why are Pygophiles Obsessed with Butts
Evolutionary biologists see a close relationship between the human beings obsession with buttocks and other primates’ fascination with the rumps of their female counterparts. Alfred Kind, a renowned sexologist suggested that the buttocks are the primary sexual presentation site in primates. Chimpanzees recognize each other from their buttocks just like human beings recognize faces. While the female baboon’s big red bottom may be an eyesore to some, it has an aphrodisiac effect on her mates. Pygophiles fascination with buttocks is therefore thought to be an evolutionary trait as has been observed in primates.
Some psychologists suggest that rounded buttocks in human beings may have evolved as a desirable trait because they provide a visual indication of the woman’s youth and fertility. They signal the presence of estrogen and sufficient fat stores for pregnancy and lactation. Additionally, the buttocks give an indication of the shape and size of the pelvis, which impacts reproductive capability. This means that the pygophiles may innately be attracted to the fertility symbolism that the ample bums depict.
Various authors have suggested that people are obsessed with buttocks because of their proximity to the anus and the genitals. While female buttocks are often eroticized in heterosexual circles, men’s buttocks are eroticized in gay male circles. Biological anthropologist Helen B. Fisher said that “perhaps, the fleshy, rounded buttocks attracted mates during rear-entry intercourse”.
Geographical location and traditional culture also has a role to play in influencing the degree of fascination towards buttocks. For example in a research conducted by the University of Buenos Aires, 59 percent of Argentinian men preferred butts even more than breasts. However, another study by the University College London found that British men don’t pay all that much attention to the booty. In Nigeria, women with thicker booties were preferred as wives.
Pop culture has also influenced people’s perceptions of buttocks. We are witnessing more and more artists referring to buttocks in music. Snoop Dogg and Jason Derulo collaborated in a pop song called “wiggle” where one of the lines goes like “How do you fit all that in them jeans” The song goes on to say “..you know what to do with that big fat butt, wiggle wiggle wiggle”. Lil Jon in another song says “Shake what your mama gave ya”. There are thousands of songs referring to buttocks. The list is endless.
Other than music, celebrities are also popularising the big booty fascination. With the mainstream appeal of celebrities with big butts like Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian, women want to emulate the way they look and flaunt their own booty to get attention. More and more women are enhancing their backside shape through silicone implants, fat injections (through a process known as the Brazilian Butt Lift), and through the old fashioned way of hard-core butt sculpting exercises. One thing is clear; the message in pop culture right now is that your backside can be your greatest asset.
The danger of pygophilia lies in the fact that it reduces a whole person to a body part that has neither intellect nor feelings. It is a relatively common fetish which does not generally require treatment unless the condition becomes problematic for the person in some way, and they feel compelled to address their condition. Many people simply learn to accept their fetish and manage to achieve sexual gratification in a satisfactory manner. Pygophiles may also be attracted to coprophilia, or have a fetish for panties or spanking, as all these practices involve the butt.
